  • The fruits are used as spice and also in pickles and preserves. They have a pungent pepper-like taste and produce salivation and numbness of the mouth
  • In some hilly parts of Vishakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh, long pepper is grown for its roots. It is grown as a perennial plant in small plots and the roots are collected for 10-30 years, the first harvest commencing from 18 months after planting.
  • Fruits and roots are used for medicinal purposes too. These are “for diseases of the respiratory tract, such as cough, bronchitis, asthma, etc; as counter-irritant and analgesic when applied locally for muscular pains and inflammation; as snuff in coma and drowsiness and internally as carminative; as sedative in insomnia and epilepsy; as general tonic and haematinic; as cholagogue (a medicinal agent which promotes the discharge of bile from the system, purging it downward) in obstruction of bile duct and gall bladder; as an emmenagogue (herbs which stimulate blood flow in the pelvic area and uterus; some stimulate menstruation) and abortifacient (causing abortion); and for other miscellaneous purposes such as anthelmintic (to destroy parasitic worms) and in dysentery and leprosy.”

Piper longum is a small shrub with a large woody root and numerous creeping, jointed stems that are thickened at the nodes. piper longum(Thippili) is a slender, perennial, aromatic, and medicinal climber with woody roots growing to a height of 90 – 120 cm.

The plant is used for ornamental purpose. Its generally keep indoor in the living room and in the terrace area. Keep the soil constantly moist for good results. Mist regularly with a spray bottle to keep a humid environment. Water container plants even more often as they will dry out fast.

  • The leaves are 5-9 cm long and 5 cm wide; lower leaves are broadly ovate, deeply cordate with big lobes at the base, sub acute, entire and glabrous; upper leaves are dark green and cordate with short petiole or nearly sessile.
  • The young shoots are drooping type.

The plant yields for 4 to 5 years. after which the yield goes down and the plants are pulled out and a fresh batch planted. Its roots are sought after in Ayurveda. It is believed they help in relieving body pain, arthritic pain, cold and cough.
